One of the advantages of joining a club is that you not only get to train with like minded people, but can draw on a wealth of advice from experienced triathletes and coaches who will help you prepare for whatever goal you have. Many clubs also run programs directed at helping people get into the sport.
Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club offers a Novice Program starting in September. This is a nine week program designed to get you to at least a novice distance triathlon at the Jackie Fairweather Memorial Triathlon in late November.
Many of our novices then go on with the Club, entering other events, coming to our Jindabyne trading camp in January. They also join many of our members at the Elite Energy Huskisson Triathlon Festival in February, where our Club organizes accommodation and the Club tent will be there so you have somewhere to shelter from the sun and meet up.
The Bilbys cater for all levels of fitness and ability, so we try to ensure that we have training sessions of varying distances and speeds. There will always be a group you can join.
Not really. To do our novice program, all you need is access to a bike (any bike will do – we have had people turn up with anything from high end road bikes through to commuter bikes with baskets), running shoes, and an ability to swim at least 50 meters. Our program will teach you the rest and get your fitness up.
We are in Canberra. Most of our training is on the north side. Our Tuesday running intervals sessions are at 6pm, Lyneham Oval in winter and Dickson Oval in summer. This is the session where we recommend people come and have a chat, because there will usually be a Committee member there.
All sorts, from recreational athletes who aren’t too serious right through to the exceptionally good.
Go down to your local club and see what they can do for you. The bigger clubs are better. They are more likely to have a range of skills among their members and therefore different level training groups in their sessions.

If you want to see what we are about, here’s a really cool video we made for our recent 30th anniversary celebration
This weekend, we’re celebrating 30 years of success as a thriving triathlon club in Canberra. It’s hard to put into words the essence of the Club, so we hope this video encapsulates the welcoming, friendly and social spirit of our members, coaches and sponsors. #BilbysSocial
