Hammer Nutrition would like thank all the athletes for the very positive comments for our products at Huski Australian Long Course Triathlon.
One age group Champion said "I received the purchased pack from your company. It was after some research that I decided to buy and try with great results. Having consumed Perpetuem pre race then Heed, Endurolytes and Hammer gels during the race I suffered no stomach discomfort at all. I had heaps of energy left in the tank but restrained myself during the run due to a slight calf injury that I felt may flare up. Anyway now converted to hammer nutrition for future races."
Lots of athletes used this event in preparation for the Ironman in 6 weeks time. We were asked heaps of questions on how to fuel for the Ironman? Our 1st concern is what's available on course from the Sponsors. We think that it is far from ideal and can even be detrimental to performance. The main thing is you do not have to consume what is on offer.
This would be our suggestion of what to fuel on:
How to fuel for Ironman
The average competitor will take between 10-14 hours for this event.
1. Keep fluid intake during exercise between 550-800/ml per hour.
2. Keep Calorie consumption to a maximum of 300 cal / hour. (1260 kj/ Hr)
3. Measure exactly what calories/kj you are consuming. Taking too much is worse than not enough!
4. Separate your hydration from your nutrition on the bike to stop confusion
5. Only consume complex Carbohydrates until the last 20-30 minutes of the run.
6. Use some form of extra Electrolyte supplementation. The longer and hotter your event the more you will need this.
Hammer's preferred fuel use.
1. on the bike Perpeutem. – mix a 4 hour bottle. Then switch to gels for the remainder of the ride. This is a great fuel which has significant advantages:
- Contains mainly Complex carbs.
- Has added soy protein which helps reduce the muscle tissue breakdown over extended periods. This will help reduce fatigue
- Contains lipids (type of fat). The body recognizes lipids being introduced into the blood stream and releases its own fat stores. This makes available more fat as an energy source which is generally used more the longer the duration of the event. This will also help stabilize blood sugar levels.
In summary, this is a product which will stabilize blood sugars and help reduce muscle fatigue. It's a one stop shop for fuel. You don't need to be consuming endless amounts of gels which become sickly sweet over time.
Endurolytes – consume 2-3 capsules per hour. This is extremely important as extra electrolytes in the right formula are necessary to prevent cramping.
One important note would be to reduce calorie consumption on the bike during the last 30 – 60 minutes. We recommend this to ensure that any likelihood of cramping at the start of the run caused by intake of nutrition on the bike is reduced. This is a major problem seen time and time again by athletes over consuming the wrong sort of calories on the bike.
2. on the run take 2 -3 HammerGels per Hour, plus 1-3 Endurolytes. Drink 550 -800 ml per hour. Avoid simple sugars until the last 20-30 minutes.
3. When finished refuel within 20-30 minutes with Recoverite (2-3 scoops)
